A designed through experience mountain climbing expedition to the top of the Atacama Desert in Chile! Join us for a great adventure locally run. All food, experienced mountain guide, camp gear, 4×4 drives, logistics and all the local contacts needed to organize such an adventure in a safe way that allows you to focus on the objective only: get to the summit!

Included

CREW; One English speaking knowledgeable driver, who would act as basecamp manager , One experienced English speaking mountain guide, One mountain guide assistant for groups larger than 4 people. One driver standing by at Copiapó ready to act if requested.

VEHICLES AND GEAR; Reliable 4WD vehicle(s) to transport people and gear (number depends on participants). High quality communal camping gear including mountain tents / mats, as well as base camp shelter. Camp tables, chairs and utensils.

COMMUNICATIONS & EMERGENCIES: First aid kit and pulse oximeter. Medical oxygen equipment for emergencies. VHF radio communication and Satellite messenger. Satellite phone (on pay per minute basis).

FEES & PERMITS: Park fees and DIFROL permits.

AIRPORT TRANSFERS: 2 times per day IN, 2 times per day OUT.

FOOD: Meals as mentioned in the itinerary. (People with diet restrictions, allergies, vegan or vegetarian should inform at the moment of booking this expedition).

  • Flights, both national and International.
  • Extra nights of lodging in the city of Copiapó.
  • Meals at Copiapó.
  • Transports to the coastal towns or any other place (available at an extra cost).
  • Personal gear (sleeping bags, camp pillows and mountain gear).
  • Medical and/or emergency evacuation to Copiapó (always available at an extra cost).
  • Earlier than programed departure.
  • Porters (personal gear portage is a task to be done by each climber).
  • Insurance.
  • Everything not mentioned in the program.

Important Note:

Insurance from your part is highly recommended, we’ll provide a contract and invoice for all of our services, including emergency evacuations (if needed) so you can ask the respective refunds from your insurance company.

Difficulty

From a technical point of view, these are all easy mountain to climb, however, from a physical perspective, this is a demanding mountaineering program; low temperatures, several days of camping, strong winds and a sustained high altitude/low oxygen stay could provide more difficulty to the ascents.

Itinerary

DAY 1

COPIAPÓ AIRPORT – COPIAPÓ – EQUIPMENT CHECK & MEETING

We’ll be waiting for you at Desierto de Atacama’s airport and drive you to your hotel in the city of Copiapó. During the late evening, our team will join you at your hotel for an equipment check, briefing of the following adventure and a session of Q&A.

Tomorrow starts the adventure.

Food: Not included today.

Accommodation: Atacama suites 4* hotel, double rooms with private bathroom.

DAY 2

COPIAPÓ – VALLE CHICO (3,000 m)

This morning we pack our vehicles to begin the journey that’s going to take to the top of the Atacama Desert.

The purpose of this first day is to gain some altitude in order to start the gradual adaptation to the altitude; Valle Chico is a small creek located around 3,000 m above sea level; we’ll camp here this first night (there is no campsite infrastructure here).

Food: Breakfast at hotel, box lunch and camp dinner.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents. Mats are included.

DAY 3

VALLE CHICO – LAGUNA SANTA ROSA (3,670 m)

After breakfast at camp, we’ll pack again and start a steep mountain road to Laguna Santa Rosa, located inside the “Nevado tres cruces” National Park; Beautiful sightseeing, flamingos and other birds and a simple but organized camping site are waiting for us here.

Food: Breakfast, box lunch and camp dinner.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents with mats or shared cabin depending on availability.

DAY 4

LAGUNA SANTA ROSA – 7 HERMANAS CLIMB (4,862 m) – LAGUNA SANTA ROSA

This morning is a good moment to your first climb, “7 hermanas” (Seven sisters”) name that receives due to its seven high points in the summit area. This climb is not technical at all and it can be conceived as a high altitude hike of about 5 hours up.

Back at camp, dinner is ready.

Simple showers and Wi-Fi are available for a small price and must be purchase directly to the camping site admin.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents with mats or shared cabin depending on availability.

DAY 5

LAGUNA SANTA ROSA – LAGUNA VERDE (4,332 m)

Breakfast, pack and off we go again! A slow but scenic drive to Laguna Verde is on the menu today, once there, we’ll set the camp again and you are welcome to enjoy the small but hot thermal pools (the hot springs are natural and don’t have any infrastructure).

Food: Breakfast, box lunch and camp dinner.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents with mats.

DAY 6

LAGUNA VERDE (Rest & altitude adapted climbers joining day)

Take it easy today, this is a resting and altitude adaptation day, good moment to check your gear and take a short hike around the gorgeous lagoon.

BTW, nights are very starry here! (if weather allows, of course).

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you’ve climbed some other +5,000 m mountain in the previous days and completed your altitude adaptation, this is the day were you can join this expedition. We’ll organize your transport from Copiapó to Laguna Verde.

Food: Breakfast, box lunch and camp dinner.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents with mats.

DAY 7

LAGUNA VERDE – SAN FRANCISCO VOLCANO CLIMB

Second climbing of the expedition; San Francisco (6,018 m). A short approaching with the 4×4 and the rest is up to you and your guide. This extinct volcano is located in the border between Chile and Argentina. If weather does not allow to climb it, we’ll try to climb the “Mulas muertas” (5,897 m).

As usual, back in the camp, dinner is ready.

DAY 8

LAGUNA VERDE – REFUGIO ATACAMA (5,200 m)

Today is time for the 4×4 to work hard as well, the demanding trail up plus the extreme high altitude doesn’t make it easy for combustion vehicles… slowly but surely, we’ll get up there; Refugio Atacama has 2 small basic shelters which might or not be available when we arrive, but we are prepared. We’ll set camp again and get ready for a cold and starry night.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents with mats.

DAY 9

REFUGIO ATACAMA – TEJOS TREK – REFUGIO ATACAMA

In order to attempt the Ojos del Salado summit, you’ll need a last high altitude trek to get ready; today you’ll join your guide again to make the portage of your gear up to Tejos (5823m), we’ll organize and leave our gear and hike down back to Atacama refuge, guess what… dinner is ready.

Food: Breakfast, box lunch and dinner.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents with mats.

DAY 10

REFUGIO ATACAMA – REFUGIO TEJOS

Big day is approaching! Last trek up to Tejos camp (with a much lighter load), set the camp and rest. You’ll be provided with dehydrated food, a basic camp stove and gas or fuel for self-cooking.

Food: Breakfast, box lunch and self-prepared dinner.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents with mats or shared shelter if available.

DAY 11

OJOS DEL SALADO CLIMB – REFUGIO ATACAMA

Get geared up and join your guide and the mountain assistant this early morning… let’s climb the highest active volcano in the world!.

Food: Box lunch and dinner at Atacama refuge.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents with mats.

DAY 12

RESERVE DAY FOR SUMMIT

If weather didn’t allow climbing the previous day, we’ll try today.

Food: Breakfast, box lunch and camp dinner.

Accommodation: Camp on 2 people tents with mats.

DAY 13

REFUGIO ATACAMA – COPIAPO

After breakfast we’ll prepare and pack all the equipment and start our long drive to Copiapó, reaching the city in the evening.

Food: Breakfast and box lunch. Dinner at the city is not included.

Accommodation: Atacama suites (4 stars) hotel, double rooms with private bathroom.

DAY 14

COPIAPÓ – AIRPORT

2 Transfers out are included to Desierto de Atacama airport.

Food: Breakfast.

Accommodation: Not included.

Cancellation Policy

If you decide to cancel your tour reservation, for any reason, the following are our terms:

Time frame / You receive:

  • 60 or more days before trip departure / 100% refund of what you have paid.
  • From 59 to 30 days before trip departure / 50% of your payment.

The reasons to cancel a booked tour will be due to bad weather conditions, closed roads, government prohibitions or security reasons of any kind. If this is the case you will get a refund of 80% of what we received (please, remember that intermediates, banks, credit cards and transfers might apply commissions to what you’ve originally paid) and will be happy to offer you another options.

Refunds are done exclusively to Chilean bank accounts or to your PayPal/Payoneer account if you’ve paid using one of those methods.
